Pilates for a New and Better YOU!

The Pilates Method is a physical movement program designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance your whole body. Pilates exercises focus on postural symmetry, breath control, abdominal strength, spine, pelvis and shoulder stabilization, muscular flexibility, joint mobility and strengthening through the complete range of motion of all joints. Instead of isolating muscle groups, your whole body is trained, integrating your upper and lower extremities with your trunk.

A Total Body Conditioning Program.

Everyone can benefit from doing Pilates. Concentration and commitment to doing your best is all that is required. Unlike any other exercise system, doing Pilates develops long, lean muscles and a strong center, the essential ingredients to maintaining good posture and balanced alignment. Even after one lesson, many find they sit and stand taller, move more gracefully, and are eager to experience more.

The Pilates Apparatus.   Joseph Pilates created a comprehensive work-out for the entire body on every single major piece of apparatus he invented. They may look like torture machines, but don't worry, with our guidance, they are actually easy to use. It is their simplicity that makes these machines incredibly versatile. "We are not limited by the equipment, it offers a world of movement possibilities ", explains Chris who custom builds all of Healing Motion's Pilates equipment. "A single piece of apparatus named the Universal Reformer can accommodate hundreds of exercise variations."

Quality Instruction.   Healing Motion’s senior Pilates instructor is the most experienced in the entire tri-state region, with over 25 years experience teaching Pilates to every imaginable type of client, and having completed two different training programs. However, all of Healing Motion's teachers have completed a comprehensive Pilates teacher training program consisting of a minimum of 450 hours and a full year of study. They each have a thorough knowledge of the all of the traditional Pilates repertoire to which they apply current biomechanical principles. Healing Motion is a member of the Pilates Method Alliance and is in compliance with all guidelines for maintaining the highest standards of practice in the industry.

Getting Started.   We suggest you begin Pilates by taking five private lessons. In these early lessons, we will modify and adjust the exercises to your own body and teach you to correct for any postural problems, previous injuries, or current limitations you may have. While learning Pilates exercises, you will "find" and properly activate the body's core muscles particularly the four layers of abdominals and the muscles of the spine. You will be asked to engage your mind to perform both deep and percussive breathing. By developing proper technique and awareness, you will actually be retraining your body to move in safer, more efficient movement patterns. Once that is achieved, you will progress into the more unique and exciting exercises. You may even find yourself in positions and stretches doing things you never thought possible.

Pilates Matwork.   At Healing Motion, we teach the original Pilates matwork so that clients may accelerate their progress by practicing on their own. The matwork is a flowing sequence of exercises that are challenging, yet feel good. They effectively integrate breath and movement, core stabilization, and stretching simultaneouslyy. For some, the matwork offers an opportunity to slow down and master the method's fundamentals. For others, it evolves into a well-paced, invigorating workout that has the advantage of being completely portable. If you have a strong interest in mastering the matwork in order to practice on your own, let your instructor know so that it is made a priority in your lessons.
